EU rules on AI models become enforceable. What's going to change?
August 2, 2026Posted by Federico Ulfo

As of August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act's rules on general-purpose AI models are enforceable, making the European Commission the world's leading AI regulator.
What providers must now do:
The Commission endorsed a voluntary code of practice; most major Western labs — including OpenAI — signed on, while Meta notably declined. Enforcement is driven by the newly established European AI Office, with external scientific panels and AI-safety firms filling resource gaps. Europeans may see model launches delayed by a few weeks as compliance procedures complete.
