On August 17 Cursor announced Origin, a code-hosting product — the company's move from the editor into the place the repository actually lives, and a direct shot at GitHub.
The launch landed hard on Hacker News: 556 points and 406 comments inside 38 hours, one of the larger developer-tooling threads of the month.
AI coding companies have spent the last two years competing over the editing surface. Owning the remote is a different bet: it puts the agent next to the pull requests, the review history and the CI signal, rather than bolted onto a working copy. It also means Cursor is now selling against Microsoft on Microsoft's most entrenched developer product, where the moat is social — the org chart, the CI integrations and the muscle memory — rather than technical.
