Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source model and dataset hub, for roughly $12.9 billion, according to a Business Insider report picked up on August 26-27. Neither company has announced anything; this is still a report.
TechCrunch reads the logic two ways: the deal would let Nvidia protect its chip empire and jump back into the cloud business. Ars Technica puts it more bluntly — Nvidia is nabbing critical infrastructure for open models at a moment when interest in them is growing.
Hugging Face is where open weights get distributed, benchmarked and discovered — a neutral layer sitting above every accelerator vendor. Owned by the company that sells most of the accelerators, that neutrality becomes a question rather than an assumption, which is most of what the reaction has been about.
