OpenAI cuts GPT-5.6 Sol API pricing by 20%

OpenAI cut the API price of GPT-5.6 Sol by 20%, and the only announcement was an edit to a documentation page.

The change surfaced on August 22 on the model's API docs page — no blog post, no launch thread, no benchmark chart, just new numbers in a pricing table. OpenAI's developer pricing docs carry the same reduction and add the one detail the model page leaves out: the lower rate is stated to hold until at least November 21.

#A floor, not a permanent cut

"Until at least" is the phrase to plan around. A dated discount is a different object from a price cut: it is a floor with an expiry, the same shape as Anthropic's introductory pricing on Sonnet 5 — something you can build a quarter's budget on, not a year's. If Sol sits in your cost model, the honest way to book this is as a temporary rate that reverts by default, with anything past November treated as unknown rather than cheap. That matters most for the commitments a cheaper token invites: pipelines you would only run at the new rate, margins quoted to customers on it, or a model choice made because Sol undercut the alternative. None of those unwind as quickly as a pricing table does.

#Read the table, not the percentage

The headline number is the 20%. The docs page is the only place the actual per-million rates live, and three things are worth confirming there before you rebase anything on them.

• Which line items moved. Input, cached input and output tokens do not have to fall together, and a cut concentrated on one of them changes the economics of very different workloads. Prompt-heavy retrieval pipelines live on the input and cached-input lines; long-generation and agentic loops live on the output line.
• When it took effect. A silent repricing via docs edit ships with no migration note and no stated effective date beyond whenever the page changed. August 22 is when the change was noticed, which is not necessarily when billing moved.
• What your invoices say. The percentage is a claim about a table; your bill is the measurement. Reconcile a few days either side of the change rather than assuming the cut applied cleanly to your account.

#Why it lands as a diff

Price cuts are the one product change a lab can ship without a defence — nobody demands a benchmark chart to justify paying less. That makes a docs page a perfectly adequate channel, and it also makes the docs page something you now have to watch. The practical takeaway for teams running on OpenAI is unglamorous: diff the pricing page on a schedule, and treat the model page and the pricing page as two sources that can disagree until you have checked both.

The quiet channel did not keep it quiet. The first Hacker News thread, on the model-page change, drew 90 points and 77 comments; the pricing-docs version followed with 198 points and 182 comments inside four hours.
