Jump to timeline ↓On June 1 GitHub switched Copilot from a flat $29 to usage-based billing at each model's API rates, with developers projecting ~$750 months. OpenAI was fighting the same arithmetic internally, where token cost had become the #2 enterprise complaint.
By late summer the era had a name and an obituary: Meta killed its tokenmaxxing leaderboard, Uber capped AI spend at $1,500 a month, and analysts began publishing what a $200 subscription is actually worth in tokens.
